neurological physiotherapy for recent strokes (within the last 6-months)

Recent Stroke Rehabilitation

Are you in hospital or now at home, having had your stroke within the last 6 months? In the case of recent strokes, even if you have only been very mildly affected, there is always something to be gained from having a neurological physiotherapy assessment. In the weeks and months following a stroke, recovery can be accelerated and optimised by specific hands-on treatment, to enable you to do things you cannot do on your own.

Stroke Rehabilitation: neuro physiotherapy carried out on leg of recent patientWe will work on improving your balance, confidence and speed of walking, both at home and outside, building towards your goals. If the stroke has affected movement and sensation, we will help with movements of weak, heavy or paralysed limbs, stimulating your muscles to work as strongly and effectively as possible.

Our physiotherapists activate muscles and re-align muscles and joints by physically moving the patient’s body. Although it may be hard work for both you and the physiotherapist, it is by re-educating your brain and body through actual movement that progress in stroke rehabilitation can be achieved.

Your progress is dependent on many factors, not just  the amount and quality of rehabilitation treatment. It is also important to realise that a stroke is a potentially deteriorating condition.

massaging a stroke patient's backOur role is not only to treat you physically, but also to provide support and encouragement when you are feeling disheartened. We will help to keep you focused on your long-term goals. Recovering from a stroke can be a long and challenging journey. We will always have time to answer your questions, and to provide constant reassurance and guidance.

If your stroke occurred more than 6 months ago, please see our information on long-term stroke recovery.

has your Mum or Dad just had a stroke?

If your Mum or Dad has had a stroke and are in hospital, you may feel unsure as to what you can do to help. It is important that you talk to them calmly and normally. It is important to assume that they understand everything you say, even if they are unable to converse and even if they aren’t making a lot of sense. Maintain a positive attitude. Reinforce every sign of recovery, no matter how small to encourage them. Stroke recovery takes place over a long period and members of the stroke rehab team offer support both in hospital and in the community.

Stroke happens suddenly and changes peoples lives.  Approximately 152,000 people have strokes in the UK each year and more than one million people in the UK are living with stroke (Stroke Association 2013).
